Michael Murphy currently serves as distinguished service professor in the Integrated Innovation Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and executive director of the university’s Center for Leadership Studies, having previously served as senior advisor to the dean in both the College of Engineering and the H. John Heinz III College of Information Systems & Public Policy. Murphy served from 2008 – 2016 as the university’s vice president for campus affairs, leading a division of 42 university administrative departments across an array of functions. Prior to his vice presidency, he served as the associate vice president, from 2005 – 2008, orchestrating a variety of campus life initiatives within the central administration, and as the university’s dean of student affairs, from 1990 – 2005, leading the division of student affairs. Prior to his appointment as dean, he served Carnegie Mellon as associate dean of student affairs, student ombudsman, director of residence life and area coordinator, respectively. He has served on numerous strategic planning, advisory and governance councils within the university, and as a consultant, advisor and accreditation reviewer for a number of institutions, including Colgate University, Columbia University Teacher’s College, Cornell University, Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, MIT, Northwestern University, Rutgers University, United States State Department, and the University of Zagreb, and is an emeritus member of the National Vice President’s Group. He is also recipient of the Robert E. Doherty Award for Sustained Contributions to Excellence in Education and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa (honorary). Murphy holds his doctoral degree in higher education from the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds a master’s degree in public management from the Carnegie Mellon University Heinz College and a master's degree in counseling and higher education from the University of Virginia. His bachelor’s degree is in economics with a concentration in psychology, also from the University of Virginia.
